So you're choosing a Diamond. Perhaps the diamond is for
a ring for that special someone, or maybe for investment
purposes. This article should help those people, who want
to choose a diamond with good value. Though it may seem
difficult, if you are educated when you go to purchase a
diamond, you will find it much easier to pick what is just
right for you. After reading this article, you be more
prepared for the task of making an informed choice.
The four C's can help you understand diamonds: cut,
clarity, color, carat.
An expert must be involved in the process of cutting
diamonds. The faceting of the diamonds is the basic thing
to watch for. It can then create more sparkle with light.
Oval, round, pear, emerald, heart and marquise are some
famous shapes.
For the clarity of a diamond, again you need an expert.
There are some slight "birthmarks" known as inclusions
over a diamond. The shining of diamonds depends on these
small and few inclusions, adding to its beauty. The
diamonds are capable of generating the most radiance. This
kind of diamond is rare and most beautiful to see.
Different diamonds indicates different profile. Blue
diamonds are "luminous". Some even smolder. External flaws
can cause a lot of clarity problems in a diamond. They mar
its beauty. This happens due to bad cutting. Internal
flaws such as, murky spots, too many inclusions, or a
rupture in the configuration take away from the clarity
and beauty of the diamond. A hand held loupe is used for
rating the clarity of a diamond. For this process, you
need again an expert.
All colors faint next to the beauty of a diamond. Even
colorless diamonds will pass light in a rainbow effect.
Sometimes, colorless diamonds will have a slight yellow
color. A diamond's color can be affected by as many as 25
different elements. Such as: nitrogen ...yellow,
boron ... blue, crystal irregularities ... pinks, browns
and reds, and natural radiation ... green.
The unit of measurement in diamond is carats. 100 points
construct one carat. So a diamond with 75 points weighs
.75 carats. Still the same weight doesn~t mean the same
value. It all depends on their cut, color and clarity. The
metric system is being used for diamond. But the
converting unit is still carat. The leverage gauge, moh
gauge and screw micrometer is used for calculating weight.
Diamonds are rare and beautiful. They are known as a girls
best friend. Possibly because true friends are also rare.
