How to Ensure a Safe Online Shopping Experience
by Fonda Compratka

Today, almost everyone has had the chance to check out the
Internet in some fashion. But, not everyone has done any
of their shopping on the Internet, and this is a shame. On
the Internet, overhead is low (no bricks and mortar), so
online vendors can consistenly offer you lower prices and
great terms like free shipping. And not only can you buy
luxuries - like jewelry and even cars - but you can also
purchase some of your essentials - such as clothing and
food. But beware! There are some dangers in online
shopping as well.

When shopping online, security is a vital issue. Not only
do you need to protect your credit card numbers from being
stolen, you also need to do everything you can to protect
yourself from the horrible crime of identity theft. But,
you can have a great online shopping experience if you just
take a few precautions.

When you shop online, always pay with your credit card to
ensure maximum protection from fraud. When you pay with a
credit card, you are able to dispute any unauthorized
charges and your credit card company will help you sort out
the issues and retrieve your money. And, so you don't need
to worry about additional fraudulent charges, your credit
card company will cancel your credit card and issue you a
new card with a new number.

Yes, even though your credit card is the best method for
shopping online, it does have it's drawbacks. Believe me -
it can be a real pain in the you-know-what if your card
number is stolen and you need to work with your credit card
company to resolve the issues. But still, using a credit
card is the fastest way to purchase your goods safely and
get them to your home.

Another thing to watch out for when shopping online is to
always make sure you understand the return policies of any
store you wish to make a purchase from. Plus, you will want
to immediately examine any item you purchase when it arrives
at your home to make sure there are no defects or shipping
damages. If there is a problem, you will want to quickly
contact the seller's customer service organization to
arrange a refund or return.

After you have purchased an item, print a record of your
transaction and any other relevant information about the
purchase online. Note down things like - from what site was
the item purchased? What is the retailer's address and
telephone number? When should the item be received? Each of
these items should be found on one of the retailer's web
pages; a screen capture is all that is needed. If there is
no date on a printout, write it in by hand.

And finally, one of the best "gut checks" for an online
shopping excursion is to trust your instincts. When
shopping on the Internet, oftentimes you will see bargains
that are too good to be true. Once in a while, you might
get lucky if you trust these types of sites. But most often
you are setting yourself up for a big disappointment. If
it looks too good to be true, it most likely is. And
remember - have a safe, and happy, online shopping trip!
