From its original conception as a timepiece, the watch has
come a long way, undergoing numerous transformations, with
new state-of-the-art materials, electronic parts, computer
chips, precious metal components, and other fine details.
Watches come in all sizes and shapes now, to suit various
markets, ranging from children and teenage markets, to young
adult and college age groups, to professional, gift, and
other markets. There is a watch to suit every mood, every
income, and every situation one might find oneself in. From
elegant watches such as Movado, Gucci, Tom Ford to designer
fashion pieces by Kate Spade, Versace, Calvin Klein and
others; to timeless classics such as Rolex and utilitarian
Swiss Army watches; to modern classic favorites such as Tag
Heuer and Omega, the variety of watches in the world is very
rich and varied. Numerous online retailers offer select
pricing such as Ashford online as well as many of the
manufacturers themselves online, as well as department
stores such as Macy's, JcPenney's, Rich's, Sears, Lord &
Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and many more.

Watches can be beautiful to look at, but their inner
workings will also impress you if you think about the
considerable skill and craftsmanship that went into making
the small timepiece. Watches have many tiny parts which must
all work together to tell time and perform several of the
other functions which are available on today's models.
Watches today can also be chronographs, alarms, altimeters,
and calendars, to name a few.
The crystal is the cover of the watch face, and there are
three common kinds: acrylic crystal, mineral crystal, and
sapphire crystal. Acrylic crystal is the most inexpensive
and has the benefit of allowing minor scratches to be buffed
away. Mineral crystal is made from several elements which
have been heat-treated to a hardness which resists
scratching. Sapphire crystal is about three times harder
than mineral crystals and 20 times harder than acrylics.
The hands are the tiny pointing devices which are fastened
to the center of the face. There are many kinds of hands,
including the baton, or "stick hand," which is narrow; the
alpha, which is slightly tapered; the dauphine, a wide,
tapered hand with a facet at the center which runs the
length of the hand; the skeleton, a cutout hand that is no
more than a frame; and the luminous, which is a skeleton
hand whose opening is filled with a light-catching material.
